TH1. Modelling of Microgrid evolution and replacement profiles of EU network infrastructure
In order to investigate the impact of Microgrids on European electricity infrastructure, we will collect relevant information about the present and future EU generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure requirements. This task will be carried out in coordination with Task TG1.
Specifically, in this task we will develop
(i) Microgrid evaluation roadmap involving the development of three future Microgrid scenarios regarding the level of penetration of micro generation (low, medium and high) for years 2010, 2020 and 2030. This will take into consideration two technology deployment scenarios (micro CHP and PV).
(ii) Electricity demand and supply scenarios. This task will involve modelling of both demand and generation profiles from 2010 to 2030. Utilities will provide necessary information regarding expected decommissioning and future generation investment profile (of both base load and peak load generation capacity), taking into account forecast growth of distributed generation of various technologies to be connected at various voltage levels.
(iii) Transmission and distribution grid infrastructure replacement scenarios. Utilities will provide data on expected replacement and reinforcement profiles of their transmission and distribution grid assets covering the period from 2010 to 2030, taking into account generation location and demand requirements. This will include load growth, aging (deterioration) and reliability driven network reinforcements.
Appropriate transmission and distribution grid models will be then developed to carry out the quantification of savings that Microgrids can create by displacing the assets of these networks. Manchester will develop the generic models of electricity infrastructure with Microgrids and the overall approach for this analysis.
INESC and EDP will develop the methodology for identify typical HV, MV and LV grids. Data relevant for the analysis will be provided by Continuon (for Netherlands), MVVand Siemens will provide data from Germany, ELTRA will provide data from Denmark, LRPD together with the University of Lodz will provide data from Poland and Ukraine, Manchester for Great Britain and ICCS/NTUA aided by CRES will provide data from Greece, while CESI will provide information regarding the Italian system.
