ÔB1. Requirements Specifications for Microgrid Control

Consideration of Microgrids must go beyond purely electrical energy related questions and include all energy flows particularly gas supplies and heat loads. University of Manchester will use established energy models to investigate the energy balances within the Microgrids and their interactions with the energy supply systems. The performance requirements for control systems of Microgrids will be specified in order to be able to carry out perform quantitative comparisons of alternative control strategies. ICCS/NTUA will review the control functions developed in the Microgrids project for Operation Optimization and Centralized Control of Microgrids using the software for MGCC. In particular, the following functions will be examined:

  • Demand & Renewable Production Forecasting
  • Economic Scheduling
  • Security Assessment
  • Demand Side Management

Possible inadequacies and short-comings will be identified. It is clear, that significant improvement is required in the Forecasting and Security Assessment functions. ARMINES will analyse the forecasting requirements as a function of the management operations needed at a single or multi-Microgrid level and for various types of control (hierarchical distributed).
